In the box containing this manual you will have found a Program Pack labelled CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER for your Organiser II. This pack is identical to an ordinary datapak except that it comes pre-filled with data on English words and special programs to enable these to be found easily and quickly. It is plugged into your Organiser II in exactly the same way as an ordinary datapak; remove the drive cover (or datapak if fitted) from one of the drives of your Organiser by pulling on the knurled surface, and simply insert the CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER into the empty slot in the normal way.
The CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER is a substantial software system which enhances the Organiser II and enables it to be used as a rapid reference for the spelling of English words. It contains approximately 23,000 words, carefully chosen to be of maximum value to as wide a range of English users as possible. All three-letter words have been omitted from the word list and plurals of nouns which involve only the addition of "s" have been excluded, and may therefore be assumed. However, different or unusual plurals are always included.
Similarly, the object form, past-tense form and genitive form of verbs involving the addition of a simple "d" or "ing" respectively, have not been included Again, unusual forms are always included.
To check the spelling of a word, you simply key in the first three (or more) letters; the CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER immediately displays those words which match the clue you have given.
Make sure that your Organiser II is off by pressing ON/CLEAR to get to the top level menu, and then selecting the OFF option {the last option in the menu)
Remove a datapak or a device cover from one at the slots on the back of your Organiser II and fit the CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER firmly in place. Press the ON/CLEAR key and this will automatically install DICT as an option in the top level menu of the Organiser. DICT will be found in the second-last position of the menu (just before OFF). Use the LEFT or RIGHT keys to verify this.
On selecting the DICT option of the top level menu, the Organiser will display the following:
DICT:_
Simply key in the first three letters of the word you want and words matching these will be displayed on the bottom line. Pressing EXE or DOWN enables you to step through these one by one. Pressing the UP key takes you back through the words already examined.
For example, to check the spelling of "necessarily", key in "NEC". The Organiser responds by displaying:
DICT:NEC_ necessarily
If you now press the DOWN key, you will be shown all other words which also start with "NEC".
If you want to be more explicit, you can add extra letters to your clue at any time. For each letter added, the Organiser will display a reduced list of words corresponding more closely to the clue you have entered.
If the Organiser cannot find any words which correspond to the clue you have entered, the message "NOT FOUND" is displayed and the machine will wait for you to alter the clue. You can alter the last character simply by overtyping it, or you can press DEL to delete the last two characters, or you can press ON/CLEAR to clear the whole clue, ready to enter a new one.
To return to the top level menu of your Organiser, clear the search clue by pressing ON/CLEAR, and then press ON/CLEAR again.
If, after installing the CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER as described in Chapter 2, you cannot find DICT in the top level menu, make sure that you have properly examined all options in this menu by using the RIGHT key repeatedly until you have stepped through past the OFF option
If DICT is still not there, press the ON/CLEAR key a couple of times and try again.
Also ensure that the CONCISE OXFORD SPELLING CHECKER pack is correctly plugged into the Organiser.
